MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of September 18-24, 2000, Big Island police arrested 23 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents, and one was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 888 DUI arrests, an increase of 0.6 percent over the 883 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 33 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,589, compared to 1,549 during the same period last year, an increase of 3 percent.

There have been 30 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 23 during the same period last year, an increase of 30 percent.

Seven of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 23 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related, and one has been confirmed as being drug-related.
