During the week of September 22-28, 2003, Big Island police arrested 22 motorists for drunk driving. Two of the drivers were involved in traffic collisions, and one was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 749 DUI arrests, compared to 629 during the same period last year, an increase of 19 percent.

There have been 1,762 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,650 during the same period last year, an increase of 7 percent.

There have been 24 fatalities so far this year, compared to 19 for the same period last year, an increase of 26 percent. There have been five fatalities attributed to drunk driving so far this year, compared to the same number at this time last year. There has been one drug-related fatality so far this year, compared to none at the same time last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
