During the week of September 25-October 1, 2000, Big Island police arrested nine motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident.

So far this year, there have been 897 DUI arrests, a decrease of 0.8 percent from the 904 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 46 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,635, compared to 1,596 during the same period last year, an increase of 2 percent.

There have been 30 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 23 during the same period last year, an increase of 30 percent.

Seven of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 23 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related, and one has been confirmed as being drug-related.
