During the week of September 27-October 3, 2004, Big Island police arrested 17 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashrd and one was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 792 DUI arrests, compared to 759 during the same period last year, an increase of 4 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,866 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,783 during the same period last year, an increase of 5 percent.

There have been 33 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 23 for the same period last year, an increase of 43 percent. There have been eight fatalities attributed to drunk driving so far this year, compared to six at this time last year, an increase of 33 percent. There have been 13 drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to eight fatalities at the same time last year, an increase of 63 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
