During the week of October 21-27, 2002, Big Island police arrested 31 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident, and four were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 724 DUI arrests, compared to 657 during the same period last year, an increase of 10 percent.

There have been 1,846 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,863 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1 percent.

There have been 21 confirmed traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 22 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5 percent. The DUI fatality count so far this year is three, compared to 11 during the same period last year, a decrease of 73 percent. There have been no drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to two during the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
