During the week of October 22-28, 2001, Big Island police arrested 17 motorists for drunk driving. Nine of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents.
So far this year, there have been 664 DUI arrests, a 31 percent decrease from the 964 arrested during the same period last year.
There have been 1,868 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,801 during the same period last year, an increase of 4 percent.
There have been 22 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 30 during the same period last year, a decrease of 27 percent. Six of the traffic fatalities this year were related to driving while intoxicated, compared to 11 at the same time last year, a decrease of 45 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
