During the week of 0ctober 30-November 5, 2000, Big Island police arrested 10 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident.

So far this year, there have been 976 DUI arrests, a decrease of 3 percent from the 1,004 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 53 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,857, compared to 1,804 during the same period last year, an increase of 3 percent.

There have been 32 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 26 during the same period last year, an increase of 23 percent.

Eight of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 25 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related, and three have been confirmed as being drug-related.
