During the week of November 3-9, 2003, Big Island police arrested 22 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic collisions, and five were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 873 DUI arrests, compared to 754 during the same period last year, an increase of 16 percent.

There have been 1,983 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,921 during the same period last year, an increase of 3 percent.

There have been 31 fatalities so far this year, compared to 25 for the same period last year, an increase of 24 percent. There have been four fatalities attributed to drunk driving so far this year, compared to the 10 at this time last year, a decrease of 60 percent. There have been two drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to none at the same time last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
