During the week of November 12-18, 2001, Big Island police arrested 22 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents.

So far this year, there have been 716 DUI arrests, a 28-percent decrease from the 999 arrested during the same period last year.

There have been 1,993 major accidents so far this year, compared to 1,937 during the same period last year, an increase of 3 percent.

There have been 25 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 32 during the same period last year, a decrease of 22 percent. Six of the traffic fatalities this year were related to driving while intoxicated, compared to 12 at the same time last year, a decrease of 50 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an islandwide basis.
