Island-wide DUI roadblock and patrols by Traffic Enforcement Unit and patrol officers this past week resulted in the arrest of 14 drivers who were suspected of being under the influence of alcohol (five in Hilo, four in Kona, one in South Kohala and four in Puna).

There were numerous other multiple arrests stemming from the 14 DUI arrests. Five for driving left of center line, one for speeding, two for driving while license suspended, three for no operatorâs license, five for not having a valid no fault insurance card, and two for improper lane usage. There were nineteen other arrests for traffic and criminal violations. There was one driver arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol who was involved in a traffic accident.

So far this year there have been 1,006 DUI arrests compared to 862 DUI arrests for the same period last year.

During this past week there were 33 major traffic accidents recorded on our highways. So far this year there were 1,806 major accidents as compared to 1,895 major accidents during the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued on an island-wide basis.
