During the week of November 27-December 3, 2000, Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were arrested after being involved in traffic accidents, and three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 1,027 DUI arrests, a decrease of 7 percent from the 1,106 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 32 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 2,011, compared to 1,992 during the same period last year, an increase of slightly less than 1 percent.

There have been 35 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 28 during the same period last year, an increase of 25 percent.

Ten of this year’s traffic fatalities, or 29 percent, have been confirmed as being alcohol-related, and three have been confirmed as being drug-related.
