MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of December 13 – December 19, 2005, Big Island police arrested thirty-two motorists for drunk driving. Six of the drivers were involved in a traffic crashes, and three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there has been a revised total of 1,035 DUI arrests, compared to 1,039 during the same period last year, a decrease of 0.4 percent. The number of arrests by district were:

There has been a revised total of 2,313 major accidents so far this year, compared to 2,412 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4 percent.

There have been 34 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 39 for the same period last year, a decrease of 13 percent. There have been 15 alcohol-related fatalities so far this year, compared to nine at this time last year, an increase of 67 percent. There have been 11 drug-related fatalities so far this year, compared to 11 at the same time last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will be continued islandwide.
