During the week of January 6, 2014, through January 12, 2014, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 24 motorists for drunk driving. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 53 DUI arrests compared with 39 during the same period last year, an increase of 35.9 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 41 major accidents so far this year compared with 30 during the same period last year, an increase of 36.7 percent.

So far this year, there have been two traffic fatalities on Hawaiʻi Island compared with one during the same period last year, an increase of 100 percent.

To date, no fatalities were related to drugs, alcohol, or a combination of both.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
