MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of February 20, 2007 – February 26, 2007, Big Island police arrested 25 motorists for drunk driving. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and four were under the age of 21.

There have been 196 DUI arrests so far this year compared with 155 at this time last year, an increase of 27 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 358 major accidents so far this year compared with 381 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6 percent.

There have been seven traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year compared with six during the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
