During the week of March 1-7, 1999, Big Island police arrested 47 motorists for drunk driving. Seven of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.

So far this year, there have been 204 DUI arrests, a 9 percent increase over the 187 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 42 major accidents during the week. They bring the total of major accidents so far this year to 367, compared to 400 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8 percent.

There has been one traffic fatality on the Big Island so far this year, compared to eight fatalities during the same period last year, a decrease of 87.5 percent.

There have been no alcohol-related traffic fatalities so far this year, compared to three at the same time last year.
