During the week of May 6, 2013, through May 12, 2013, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 28 motorists for drunk driving. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Eight were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 486 DUI arrests compared with 520 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.5 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 488 major accidents so far this year compared with 557 during the same period last year, a decrease of 12.4 percent.

So far this year, there were 13 traffic fatalities on Hawaiʻi Island compared with 14 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.1 percent.

To date, four fatalities were related to drugs only (1), alcohol only (1), or a combination of both (2).

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
