During the week of May 20, 2013, through May 26, 2013, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 19 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 534 DUI arrests compared with 585 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.7 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 558 major accidents so far this year compared with 612 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.8 percent.
So far this year, there were 13 traffic fatalities on Hawaiʻi Island compared with 14 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.1 percent.
To date, four fatalities were related to drugs only (1), alcohol only (1), or a combination of both (2).
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
