During the week of April 26-May 2, 1999, Big Island police arrested 24 motorists for drunk driving. Seven of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.
So far this year, there have been 455 DUI arrests, a 42 percent increase over the 321 arrested during the same period last year.
There were 35 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 712, compared to 764 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7 percent.
There have been four traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 12 fatalities during the same period last year, a decrease of 67 percent.
There have been no alcohol-related traffic fatalities so far this year, compared to three at the same time last year.
