During the week of June 10, 2013, through June 16, 2013, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 24 motorists for drunk driving. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Seven were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 594 DUI arrests compared with 643 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.8 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 647 major accidents so far this year compared with 694 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.8 percent.

So far this year, there were 18 traffic fatalities on Hawaiʻi Island compared with 14 during the same period last year, an increase of 28.6 percent.

To date, four fatalities were related to drugs only (1), alcohol only (1), or a combination of both (2).

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
