During the week of June 17, 2008, through June 23, 2008, Big Island police arrested 16 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash.

So far this year, there have been 670 DUI arrests compared with 621 during the same period last year, an increase of 8 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 862 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,004 during the same period last year, a decrease of 14 percent.

So far this year, there have been 12 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 17 during the same period last year, a decrease of 29 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
