During the week of June 24, 2013, through June 30, 2013, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 23 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 628 DUI arrests compared with 694 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.5 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 673 major accidents so far this year compared with 735 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.4 percent.

So far this year, there were 18 traffic fatalities on Hawaiʻi Island compared with 14 during the same period last year, an increase of 28.6 percent.

To date, four fatalities were related to drugs only (1), alcohol only (1), or a combination of both (2).

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
