During the week of July 15, 2008, through July 21, 2008, Big Island police arrested 41 motorists for drunk driving. Ten of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. One was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 779 DUI arrests compared with 725 during the same period last year, an increase of 7 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 999 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,167 during the same period last year, a decrease of 14 percent.

So far this year, there have been 14 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 19 during the same period last year, a decrease of 26 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
