MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of July 25-July 31, 2006, Big Island police arrested 10 motorists for drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash and one was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been a total of 686 DUI arrests, compared with a revised total of 566 during the same period last year, an increase of 21 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There has been a revised total of 1,474 major accidents so far this year, compared with a revised total of 1,384 during the same period last year, an increase of 7 percent.

There has been a total of 20 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared with 19 for the same period last year, an increase of 5 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
