During the week of September 5, 2011, through September 11, 2011, Big Island police arrested 39 motorists for drunk driving. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

So far this year, there have been 1,036 DUI arrests compared with 1,074 during the same period last year, a decrease of 3.5 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 963 major accidents so far this year compared with 968 during the same period last year, a decrease of of 0.5 percent.

So far this year, there were 15 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 20 during the same period last year, a decrease of 25 percent.

To date, 10 fatalities this year were related to drugs only (3), alcohol only (3), or a combination of both (4).

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
