During the week of September 20-26, 1999, Big Island police arrested 21 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were arrested for DUI after being involved in traffic accidents.

So far this year, there have been 889 DUI arrests, a 19-percent increase over the 747 arrested during the same period last year.

There were 44 major accidents during the week. They bring the total number of major accidents so far this year to 1,564, compared to 1,648 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5 percent.

There have been 23 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to 28 fatalities during the same period last year, a decrease of 18 percent.

Seven of the fatalities this year have been alcohol-related, compared to 12 at the same time last year, a decrease of 42 percent. One of the fatalities this year was also drug-related.
