Media Release

During the week of October 2, 2007, through October 8, 2007, Big Island police arrested 21 motorists for drunk driving. Seven of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. Three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 1,019 DUI arrests compared with 968 during the same period last year, an increase of 5 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,610 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,936 during the same period last year, a decrease of 17 percent.

So far this year, there have been 30 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 29 during the same period last year, an increase of 3 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
