During the week of October 9, 2007, through October 15, 2007, Big Island police arrested 16 motorists for drunk driving. Six of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. One was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 1,035 DUI arrests compared with 991 during the same period last year, an increase of 4 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,651 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,962 during the same period last year, a decrease of 16 percent.

So far this year, there have been 32 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 29 during the same period last year, an increase of 10 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
