MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of October 24, 2006 – October 30, 2006, Big Island police arrested 26 motorists for drunk driving. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 1,018 DUI arrests compared with 810 during the same period last year, an increase of 26 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 2,057 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,998 during the same period last year, an increase of 3 percent.

There have been 30 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year compared with 29 for the same period last year, an increase of 3 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
