During the week of December 3, 2012, through December 9, 2012, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 33 motorists for drunk driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 1,394 DUI arrests compared with 1,369 during the same period last year, an increase of 1.8 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,362 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,307 during the same period last year, an increase of 4.2 percent.

So far this year, there were 37 traffic fatalities on Hawaiʻi Island compared with 20 during the same period last year, an increase of 85 percent.

To date, 28 fatalities were related to drugs (12), alcohol (4), or a combination of both (12).

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
