During the week of December 9, 2013, through December 15, 2013, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 40 motorists for drunk driving. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 1,278 DUI arrests compared with 1,419 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.9 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,268 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,397 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.2 percent.

So far this year, there were 25 traffic fatalities on Hawaiʻi Island compared with 37 during the same period last year, a decrease of 32.4 percent.

To date, 13 fatalities were related to drugs (5), alcohol (2), or a combination of both (6).

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
