MEDIA RELEASE

During the week of December 12,2006 – December 18, 2006, Big Island police arrested 34 motorists for drunk driving. Twelve of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes and one was under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 1,213 DUI arrests compared with 983 during the same period last year, an increase of 23 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 2,361 major accidents so far this year compared with 2,326 during the same period last year, an increase of 2 percent.

There have been 33 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year compared with 34 for the same period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
