During the week of December 23, 2013, through December 29, 2013, Hawaiʻi Island police arrested 29 motorists for drunk driving. Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 1,343 DUI arrests compared with 1,471 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.7 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,311 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,458 during the same period last year, a decrease of 10 percent.

So far this year, there were 25 traffic fatalities on Hawaiʻi Island compared with 38 during the same period last year, a decrease of 34.2 percent.

To date, 13 fatalities were related to drugs (5), alcohol (2), or a combination of both (6).

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
