Media Release (corrections in 1st paragraph)

During the week of November 28, 2011, through December 4, 2011, Big Island police arrested 22 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.

So far this year, there have been 1,347 DUI arrests compared with 1,410 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.5 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,262 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,323 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.6 percent.

So far this year, there were 21 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 24 during the same period last year, a decrease of 12.5 percent.

To date, 13 fatalities this year were related to drugs only (3), alcohol only (5), or a combination of both (5).

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
