Police are warning Hilo residents to guard against a thief who is apparently preying upon the elderly.

In separate incidents Sunday (August 13, 2000), an 86-year-old man and an 89-year-old woman told police that a man posing as a maintenance man stole money from their apartments at separate addresses.

In the first case, the male victim said he let what a man who said he was a maintenance man into his unit at the E Komo Mai apartment complex. After the suspect left, the victim discovered about $170 in cash was missing.

In the second incident, the female victim allowed a man claiming to be an employee sent to change screen doors to enter her unit at the Hilo Lagoon Centre. When the man left, she discovered that about $100 had been taken from her wallet.

The suspect is described as Caucasian, being about 5-feet-8 in height, weighing about 150 pounds with a slim build and having brown hair. Both witnesses said the man was wearing dark shorts.

Police are warning elderly residents to check strangers’ identification before letting them into their residence.
