A three-bedroom Hilo home was destroyed by fire Wednesday (May 24, 2000).

Responding to a 4:10 p.m. call, police and fire units arrived at the residence, located at 762 Waianuenue Avenue, to find the single-story structure totally engulfed in flames.

The owner and occupant of the home, Leslie Chang, 87, managed to escape the house with help from neighbors. He was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was reported in satisfactory condition and was being held overnight for observation for smoke inhalation.

Although the house was considered a total loss, estimated damages to the structure and its contents were not immediately determined.

Fire personnel are investigating to determine the cause of the blaze.
