MEDIA RELEASE (UPDATE)

An autopsy has determined that Louis D. Vierra of Ahualoa died of a heart attack. The 70-year-old Vierra died Saturday (June 16) after being involved in a one-vehicle crash on the Old Mamalahoa Highway and Kapuna Road in the Hamakua District.

Responding to a 9:04 a.m. call, Hamakua patrol officers determined that Vierra was operating a 1984 Toyota pick-up truck and traveling north on the Old Mamalahoa Highway when the truck ran off the right side of the road and struck an embankment. The truck then came back onto the road, crossed the centerline and struck a utility pole on the left side of the road.

Fire Rescue personnel transported the victim to North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:57 a.m.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers initiated a coroner’s inquest case and ordered an autopsy, which took place Monday morning (June 18) at Kona Community Hospital.
