MEDIA RELEASE

Police have initiated a criminal negligent storage of a firearm investigation against a Hamakua man whose son accidentally shot and wounded another youth in the head.

Shortly before 7 p.m. Friday (July 2, 2004), Hamakua patrol officers responded to a report of an accidental shooting that occurred in Haina Camp.

They determined that a 13-year-old male was playing with his father’s .22-caliber revolver when he accidentally shot a 14-year-old male companion in the head. The wounded youth was taken to the North Hawaii Community Hospital, then transferred to the Kona Community Hospital, where he underwent surgery. He was later released in good condition.

East Hawaii Juvenile Aid Section detectives then initiated the investigation against the 13-year-old’s father.
