Media Release

A 47-year-old Hilo man died Saturday (March 1) from injuries he sustained in a motorcycle crash at the intersection of Railroad Avenue and Lama Street.

The victim was identified as Clayton K. Fukuhara of a Hilo address.

Responding to a 11:29 p.m. call, South Hilo patrol officers determined that the victim was operating a 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle and traveling east on Lama Street when he failed to stop at the stop sign and crashed in a driveway of a residence across the intersection.

The victim was pronounced dead at 2:00 a.m. (March 2) at Hilo Medical Center.

It is unknown at this time if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash. The victim was not wearing a helmet.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the 8th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with eight at this time last year.
