Hilo man dies in public accident 01-03-06

On Sunday (January 1, 2006) a 20-year old male from Hilo apparently died as a result of injuries sustained while diving off the Piihonua Bridge.

The victim is identified as Puna Kamelamela, 20, of Hilo.

At about 3:05 p.m. on Sunday, the victim was reported to have fallen while attempting to dive off of the Piihonua Bridge into the pond below. It was reported that the victim was standing on a piece of wood that was part of the bridge railing and was about to dive off, when the wood broke causing him to miss the water and land on the rocks approximately thirty feet below.

Fire Rescue personnel recovered the victim from the bottom of the pond, approximately ten feet deep. He had sustained injuries to his head and legs.

The victim was transported to the Hilo Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m.

Police have classified the incident as a Public Accident and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
