Hilo man victim of apparent drowning 09-17-05

A 24-year old male from Hilo apparently drowned on Saturday (September 17, 2005) in waters off Richardson Beach Park in South Hilo.

The victim is identified as James Givens, 24, of Hilo.

At about 2:35 p.m., the victim was reported to have been overcome by waves and a strong current. A friend of the victim attempted to rescue him, but was unable to succeed due to the rough seas and strong current.

Lifeguards and fire rescue personnel were able to retrieve the victim with the use of a helicopter. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was administered and the victim was transported to the Hilo Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 3:34 p.m.

Police have classified the incident as a Coroner’s Inquest and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
