Hilo missing person investigation 01-31-06

On Sunday, January 29, 2006, at about 5:41 p.m., patrol officers from the South Hilo Patrol Division and Hawai`i Fire Department Rescue Units responded to a report of a 29 year old female, that was swept away while swimming at the Peepee Falls, in the upper Kaumana area of Hilo.

It was reported that the female, who was later identified as Jan C. Callahan, 29, of a Hilo address, was swimming in the ponds with friends when she was reportedly swept away by the river current. It was reported by her companions, that Ms. Callahan, had only recently relocated to Hilo from Utah.

Fire Rescue personnel conducted a ground and aerial search of the area, however was unable to locate the female party. The search was suspended due to darkness and resumed at first light the next morning.

Police have initiated a missing person investigation.
