MEDIA RELEASE UPDATE

Hilo Criminal Investigation Section Sunday (May 16, 1999) charged a Hilo man with murder and other offenses in the death of a 37-year-old Hilo man after a dispute involving a love triangle, at an Auwae Street farm lot in Hilo.

At 5:30 p.m., detectives charged Van Kahumoku, 49, with second-degree murder, terroristic threatening, place to keep firearms, carrying or use of a firearm in the commission of a separate felony and promoting detrimental drugs in the third degree.

The suspect is being held in the Hilo police cellblock on $100,000 bail pending arraignment and plea.

Preliminary indications are that the victim died from apparent gunshot wounds to the head and body. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

Responding to a 1:29 a.m. call on Saturday, police discovered the body of the victim, Randolph Hall of Hilo, at the Auwae Street farm lot. He was later pronounced dead at the Hilo Medical Center.
