MEDIA RELEASE

Puna police are looking for the driver of a car that struck a 9-year-old girl who was riding her bicycle Thursday (July 13, 2000) on Maile Street in the Puna subdivision of Leilani Estates and left the scene of the accident.

Responding to a 3:50 p.m. call Thursday, police learned that the victim had been riding her bicycle near the turn on Maile Street when she was struck by a car that left the scene before officers could arrive. The victim was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where she was treated for her injuries and released.

The girl described the car as being a metallic light blue sedan. The make and model of the car and the number of the license plate are unknown.

The victim described the driver as being a Filipino female, being about 5-feet-10 in height, weighing about 120 pounds with a slim build and having short dark brown hair, brown eyes and a fair complexion. The driver was last seen wearing a belted brightly colored dress with black prints on it.

Police said the suspect might frequent the Pahoa or Leilani Estates areas.

Anyone with information about the accident or the driver is asked to call Officer Jeff Grantz of the Puna Patrol at 966-5835.
