MEDIA RELEASE

Two juvenile hitchhikers reported that they were robbed at knifepoint early Monday (July 31, 2000) by the driver of a pickup truck.

The male victims, a 19-year-old and a 17-year-old, told investigators they were hitchhiking when they were picked up at the intersection of Queen Kaahumanu Highway and Henry Street near the Borders bookstore by an older model, red Toyota pickup truck.

The victims said that as they were riding in the bed, they were driven to Kienaloli Road above Kailua-Kona, where at about 3:30 a.m., the driver pulled a knife and robbed the 17-year-old of an undisclosed amount of cash.

The victims said they were then driven to the Kuakini Street Chevron service station, where they entered the store and purchased some items. The victims said they were then driven about a half-mile north on Queen Kaahumanu Highway and dropped off.

They described the suspect as a Mexican male having a dark complexion and being about 5-feet-8 in height with slim build. He was described as wearing a white T-shirt and unknown colored pants.

The victims said there were two other occupants in the cab of the truck, but they were unable to describe them.
