Police are looking for a male suspect who stole a number of items from the Big Island Collectibles store in downtown Hilo.

The theft occurred between 11:35 and 11:40 a.m. Tuesday (April 23, 2002) at the shop, located at 185 Kilauea Avenue.

The suspect, accompanied by a 2-year-old girl, came into the store, appeared to be shopping and was seen placing items in his backpack. When confronted by the owner of the shop, the suspect left the store and was last seen heading west on Ponahawai Street.

He reportedly took a roll of 500 “buffalo-head” nickels valued at $3,500, a bicentennial set of coins, other miscellaneous foreign coins, baseball cards and miscellaneous jewelry. The total value of the stolen items was estimated at $10,100.

The suspect was described as a Caucasian male in his mid-30s, being about 5-feet-8 in height, weighing about 140 pounds with a slim build, having hair cut short on the sides and long in the back. He was wearing a light-colored tank top and blue jean shorts.

Police said pawn shops and other similar establishments should be on the lookout for anyone trying to sell the stolen items.
