Ka’u Cockfight 03/07/99

Hilo and Kona Vice Section and Criminal Intelligence Unit officers arrested four men for a variety of offenses as the result of a raid on a cockfight Sunday (March 7, 1999) in Pahala, Ka’u District.

About 175 persons were attending the cockfight when it was raided at 2:40 p.m.

Arrested were:

  • Leo Ventura, 57, of Pahala, for four counts of cruelty to animals, four counts of gambling, two counts of attempted cruelty to animals and one count of attempted gambling.
  • Emelio Augustin Sr., 54, of Pepeekeo, for one count of cruelty to animals and one count of gambling.
  • Edgar Tagorda, 42, of Pepeekeo, for one count of attempted cruelty to animals and one count of attempted gambling.
  • Florentino Orcino, 45, Pahala, for one count of attempted cruelty to animals.

All were released pending further investigation.

The raid was part of the police department’s ongoing activities against cockfighting and organized gambling on the Big Island.

Lieutenant Chad Fukui, head of the Hilo Vice Section, thanked the public for its continued support in reporting illegal cockfighting activities. He asked anyone with information about cockfighting or other illegal gambling activities to call Hilo Vice at 961-2258 or Kona Vice 326-4240.
