Media Release

Detectives from the Hawaii Police Department are investigating an apparent drowning early Monday in Ka’u.

Dispatchers received a 911 call at 12:31 a.m. reporting a man in distress in the water at South Point.

Preliminary investigations determined that 53-year-old William Evangelista of Pahala was night fishing with a friend on the cliffs of South Point when he apparently fell into the water because of poor lighting.

Fire rescue personnel recovered his body approximately 50 feet from shore with no signs of life.

The case has been classified as a coroner’s inquest. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.
