Media Release (update)

Kona Juvenile Aid Detectives have charged a Ka’u man with five offenses in connection with a sexual assault over the weekend.

John Appleby, 26, was charged at 11:40 a.m. Friday (September 28) with attempted second-degree murder, kidnapping, second-degree assault and two counts of first-degree sexual assault.

These charges stem from an incident that was reported by an adult female, who said she was struck with a rock, held against her will, sexually assaulted and nearly drowned by Appleby, a former boyfriend, at a remote Ka’u beach late Saturday night and into Sunday morning.

Appleby is being held in the Kona police cellblock in lieu of $250,000 bail pending his initial court appearance.
