MEDIA RELEASE

The Records Section at the Kona police station closed today (June 28) because of heavy smoke from a fire at the nearby green waste section of the Solid Waste Transfer Station in Kealakehe.

The Fire Department reported the fire at 11:32 p.m. Wednesday (June 27).

Around 10 a.m. Thursday the winds shifted in the northerly direction, pushing large amounts of smoke to the police station in Kealakehe. Some nonessential civilian employees were sent home and the Records Section was closed for the day but the Police station remained open to the public for other police business.

The heavy smoke also caused evacuation of 90 animals from the Hawaii Island Humane Society in Kona.
