Kona police arrested one man during a raid Monday (April 5, 1999) on a cockfight in Kealakekua, South Kona.

Acting on a search warrant at 3:24 p.m., police arrested Dean Fernandes, 50, of Kealakekua, for three counts of cruelty to animals and three counts of gambling. He was released pending further investigation.

Taking part in the operation were officers from the Kona Vice Section, Kona Criminal Investigation Section, Hawaii Isle Police Activities League and Kona Patrol Division.

Police said 30 to 40 people were present at the cockfight when it was raided.

Lieutenant Bob Hickcox, head of the Kona Vice Section, said the raid was part of the police department’s continuing efforts to curtail illegal gambling and cockfighting activities on the Big Island.

Hickcox thanked the public for its continued support in reporting illegal cockfighting activities. He said anyone with information about cockfighting or other illegal gambling activities should call Kona Vice at 326-4240 or Hilo Vice at 961-2258.
